Breakthrough Joint/Tendon Treatment
February 25, 2013
Dr. DeBoyer has introduced a new stem cell treatment for patients who want to avoid or cannot undergo knee surgery.
Stem Cells - now in Space
February 28, 2013
The capsule SpaceX Dragon is taking embryonic mouse stem cells through space, to study the effects of long term exposure to space on cells.
‘Bioteeth’ grown from gum stem cells
March 12, 2013
Scientists from King's College London have merged human gum tissue with epithelial cells from mice, and then prompted the cells to differentiate into a tooth.
In the beginning there is the stem cell; it is the origin of an organism's life. It is a single cell that can give rise to progeny that differentiate into any of the specialized cells of embryonic or adult tissues.

The Skin Gun
Stem cells are the origin from which differentiated cells are created. They come from embryos, umbilical cord blood, and most surprising of all, in EACH TISSUE OF THE BODY. Called a “stem cell niche”, or somatic stem cells, these cells aren’t used until the need for extra cells, or when a disease or injury strikes. They can either divide to form new daughter cells, or become a specific type of cell for an explicit function, such as muscle or skin cells.
Dr. DeBoyer has introduced a new stem cell treatment for patients who want to avoid or cannot undergo knee surgery. Using the patient's own stem cells and a state-of-the-art centrifuge, he is able to inject 170000 stem cells into the patient's knee. Treatment was reported to take place in 24 hours, leaving the patient with a brand new knee.
Stem cells are going to outer space! The capsule SpaceX Dragon is taking embryonic mouse stem cells through space, to study the effects of long term exposure to space on cells. Astronauts who have been through space have come back, reporting damage to antibodies, fertility and blood cells. Once the stem cells are taken back to labs in Hawthorne California, they will be used to produce new mice, which will be studied. This signals new pathways for both space biology and stem cells.
Scientists from King's College London have merged human gum tissue with epithelial cells from mice, and then prompted the cells to differentiate into a tooth. Once the merged cells were inserted into the mice, the mice were reported to have grown a hybrid tooth. In the future this method could be applied to human teeth, potentially ending the need for dentures alll together.
